This image depicts Shah Jahan in happier times with his four sons. His eldest son—Dara Shikoh—hands him a plate of jewels. This gesture indicates he was favored to succeed his father. His younger brother—Awrangzib, behind Shah Jahan—became the future emperor Alamgir. He imprisoned and executed his brothers. The ailing Shah Jahan was imprisoned in the Red Fort, where he spent his final years gazing out from a terrace as the sun set each day on his magnificent Taj Mahal.
