Commissioned during the reign of Shah Jahan, this image includes three Mughal emperors—Jahangir on the left, Akbar (his father) in the center, handing the crown to Janhangir’s son, Shah Jahan, on the right. While this portrait ideally conveys a smooth transition of power connecting the three emperors, the reality was often quite different.
