In 1580, Akbar received three Jesuits at the Mughal court. This picture depicts a Jesuit from about twenty years later. Notice how the artist portrays the figure barefoot, with a blue robe and hat, holding a book. The gradual shading of the robes suggesting volume, and the landscape receding into the background are all European influences derived from prints brought by the Jesuits as part of their books.
