Youth & Family Classes—Fall 2010

Studio Classes

PARENT/CHILD
Ages 3–5 with adult
10–11:30 a.m.
Saturdays, Sept. 18–Oct. 30 (no class Oct. 16)
Cost is $145. Museum members receive a 20% discount.

Children accompanied by an adult explore the fundamentals of art. Children work with paint, collage and clay each week while parents create their own artwork at separate tables. Visits to the collection will introduce art through conversation, looking games and stories. Note: We ask that the adult attending this class remain consistent each week.

BEGIN WITH BASICS
Ages 3–4
10–11:30 a.m.
Fridays, Sept. 17–Oct. 29 (no class Oct. 15)
Saturdays, September 18 – October 30 (no class October 16)

Nurture a child’s creativity! Young children explore art concepts by working with paint, collage and clay. Visits to the galleries contain age-appropriate activities that allow students to see and talk about art as a group. Students should feel comfortable without a parent or guardian.

EXPLORE FUNDAMENTALS
Ages 5–6
10–11:30 a.m.

Children expand upon their experiences in painting, collage and 3-D processes as they work with a wider range of materials. Seeing and talking about art in the collection builds perception skills and increases art vocabulary. Students should feel comfortable without a parent or guardian.

SCULPTURE STUDIO
Ages 6–8
10 a.m. – Noon
1:30–3:30 p.m.

Construct, model, carve and cast! Learn about the various ways to create sculpture and practice making your own three-dimensional forms. Visit the galleries to see and explore the subjects, materials and purposes of sculpture from ancient civilizations to today.

CREATING COMIC STRIPS
Ages 9–12
10 a.m.–Noon

POW! ZONK! WHAM! Learn how to tell a story through a sequence of images. Develop your own funny cartoon ideas, characters and stories, and draw them in a comic strip format.

DRAWING & PAINTING
Ages 7–9
1:30–3:30 p.m.

Instructor: Bill Brewer

Work with graphite, charcoal, watercolor, ink, tempera paint and more to explore the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Students will draw from art in the galleries and lessons will focus on learning about line, color, space, expression and composition.

WORKING WITH CLAY
Ages 7–9

Art in the collection, from the ancient world to the present, inspires students as they learn about hand-building with clay and various surface treatments. The class also will explore the Project Space exhibition Forever, by Clare Twomey, a room-sized installation of 1,345 ceramic drinking cups created specifically for the Nelson-Atkins.

INSPIRED BY AFRICAN ART: DRAWING, PAINTING & PRINTMAKING
Ages 9–13
1:30–3:30 p.m.

Develop your skills in drawing, painting and printmaking by sketching from art in the galleries and transforming them into paintings and prints. Several class periods will focus on the featured exhibition Through African Eyes, as well as the permanent collection of African art to provide the subject matter for lessons on line, shape, color, composition and expression.


PLEASE NOTE: Students must have already turned the specified age of the class in which they wish to enroll. 

Enrollment is open for the following classes and workshops.

The date listed is the date a class begins or a workshop meets. Click on the class title for a description and to complete your enrollment.

Enrollment deadline is one week prior to a class or workshop. Classes that do not reach a minimum enrollment will be cancelled and fees refunded.

If a class is full, it will be marked as SOLD OUT. You may contact the Museum or call 816.751.1ART to put your child on a waiting list. People on the list will be called in order if there is a cancellation.

CANCELLATION, REFUND AND TRANSFER POLICIES – PLEASE READ!

CANCELLATIONS: Students can cancel an enrollment 5 business days prior to a class or one-time workshop to receive a refund less a $15 cancellation fee per enrollment. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made less than 5 business days prior.

TRANSFERS: If switching an enrollment from one class/workshop to another, a $10 transfer fee will be incurred on a per student/per class basis. Please feel certain of your schedule and class selection before enrolling to avoid incurring this charge.

CLASS CREDITS: We do not issue credits toward future classes or workshops if you cancel an enrollment or miss a class.

Thank you for your adherence to the above policies. Your cooperation helps the Museum offer all patrons the opportunity to participate and offsets service costs such as credit card banking fees.
