Toast to Our 75th Anniversary
On Dec. 11, 1933, nearly 8,000 people waited in line to tour the new William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art and Atkins 
Museum of Fine Arts.
A dedication ceremony was broadcast live from Atkins Auditorium on radio station WDAF with an NBC hookup to more than forty stations throughout the country.
The newly formed Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra made its national debut, playing the first and second movements of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.
By the end of December of that year, it was estimated that 100,000 people had visited the new Museum.
Seventy-five years later, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art glows with its new expansion, the Bloch Building, and its encyclopedic collection is considered one of the finest in the nation.
To commemorate our 75th anniversary, the Museum is hosting a year-long celebration that includes special events, programs and exhibitions.
