Become a volunteer museum guide
Nelson-Atkins Museum Guides are trained volunteers who welcome guests and inspire curiosity through engaging, hands-on experiences in the galleries. They support a variety of drop-in activities — such as art-making, interactive gallery stations, and informal conversations — that help visitors of all ages connect with art in meaningful ways.
What museum guides do
As a Museum Guide, you’ll facilitate learning experiences for both children and adults, working equally with guests of all ages. You might help guests explore a work of art through conversation, invite them to create something of their own, or lead an activity tied to a current exhibition.
Guides work throughout the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions, creating an environment that’s welcoming, engaging, and inclusive for every guest.
Training and commitment
Initial training
The Museum Guide program begins with a nine-session training designed to prepare you for in-gallery activities.
- Schedule: Choose Tuesday or Saturday mornings, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. (January–March, with breaks for holidays)
- Duration: Nine sessions, plus two to three hours of homework and practice each week
- Style: Hands-on, interactive, and discussion-based
- Content: Teaching strategies and art history in the context of gallery-based activities
Ongoing commitments
Once training is complete, you’ll begin working in the galleries and continue developing your skills through ongoing continuing education.
- Volunteer two times per month for three-hour shifts (evenings or weekends)
- Complete at least 24 shifts per year
- Participate in continuing education throughout the year
Who we’re looking for
No prior art history knowledge is required—what matters most is curiosity, a love of learning, and an interest in connecting with people of all ages.
Successful Museum Guides are friendly, self-motivated, and adaptable. They listen well, welcome diverse perspectives, and embrace an audience-centered approach to learning (Museum Guides do not lecture). A commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion is essential, as is the ability to accept feedback and grow from it.
Program requirements
- No prior art history knowledge needed
- Must be 18+ years old and complete a background check
- Have an active email account for scheduling and resources
- Apply and interview for acceptance (spots are limited)
The rewards of becoming a museum guide
As a Museum Guide, you’ll connect more deeply with the Nelson-Atkins and the Kansas City community while sharing your enthusiasm for learning and art. You’ll develop new skills, expand your knowledge, and form friendships with fellow volunteers and staff. Most importantly, you’ll help guests of all ages spark a love of discovery and cultural understanding.
